THE PRETTY RECKLESS frontwoman Taylor Momsen spoke to Download TV about how the band's upcoming album, 'Death By Rock And Roll', ended up featuring a guest appearance by RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE's Tom Morello on the song 'And So It Went'. She said (see video below): 'I've known Tom for a few years now, but we kind of reconnected at the 'I Am The Highway' tribute for Chris Cornell; we both played with SOUNDGARDEN on the song 'Loud Love'. As I was making the record, the song 'And So It Went' came about, and I called him up and I said, 'This is begging for your voice on this. This is begging for a Tom Morello solo,' just 'cause he has such a unique voice and a unique sound that is so distinctive to him. And I said, 'Dude, are you in? Do you like the song? Is it something that you can contribute to?' And then he was all about it and he sent back his wizardry. And I'll tell you this, when it comes, it comes in slamming, and it's so undeniably Tom Morello, he makes the song. It's awesome.'
Morello joins previously announced guests Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron from SOUNDGARDEN. The song with Cameron and Thayil, called 'Only Love Can Save Me Now', was recorded at Seattle's legendary London Bridge Studios, where seminal LPs like PEARL JAM's 'Ten' and SOUNDGARDEN's 'Louder Than Love' were laid down.
'Death By Rock And Roll', the fourth studio album from THE PRETTY RECKLESS, will arrive in late 2020 or early 2021. It will follow up 2016's 'Who You Selling For', which featured the rock radio hits 'Oh My God', 'Back To The River' and 'Take Me Down'.
In a recent interview with WRIF, Momsen called 'Death By Rock And Roll' 'like a rebirth for us. In a lot of ways, it almost feels like the first record in the sense that we really threw everything that we had at it — we worked so hard on it,' she said. 'And I'm just excited for it to be out and have people come on this journey with me and see where it took us. I think it took us, in my opinion, to a new level. It's a new and improved PRETTY RECKLESS.'
The 'Death By Rock And Roll' title track recently cracked the Top 10 at rock radio.

'Heaven Knows' is a song by American rock band The Pretty Reckless from their second studio album, Going to Hell (2014). It was written by Taylor Momsen and Ben Phillips, while Kato Khandwala was responsible for production. Released on November 19, 2013, as the album's second single, 'Heaven Knows' is the band's first single to top a Billboard chart (Mainstream Rock), and the second single to top UK Rock Singles Chart, following their debut single 'Make Me Wanna Die' (2010). The song later entered the Alternative Songs chart, peaking at number 20.
Background[edit]
Following the end of their worldwide tour The Medicine Tour in 2012, the band began working on their second studio album. They were recording at Water Music Recording Studios in Hoboken, New Jersey, when the studio was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. They lost a lot of equipment and recordings of songs meant for the album and had to do a lot of re-recording.[1]Interscope Records released 'Kill Me' to digital retailers on December 2, 2012; it would serve as the album's lead single. However, a conflict with the record company, mostly because of the poor performance of 'Kill Me' on charts and sales, caused The Pretty Reckless to end their deal with Interscope, and on September 24, 2013, it was announced the band had signed on with the label Razor & Tie.[2]
'Heaven Knows' premiered on November 19, 2013, on Sirius XM's Octane, and on the same day, it was released as the album's second single to digital retailers.[3]
Critical reception[edit]
Chris Payne of Billboard praised 'Heaven Knows' and described it as 'Queen's 'We Will Rock You' & Billy Squire 's The Stroke with Joan Jett vocals'.[4] Chucky Eddy of Rolling Stone also praised the song, calling it a 'full-on glam [stomp] about troubled teens'.[5]
Commercial performance[edit]
'Heaven Knows' was The Pretty Reckless' first single to top a Billboard chart. It was their first entry on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart and it ended up peaking at number one for three consecutive weeks.[6] It was the second song by a female-fronted band to top that chart in 24 years.[4] After the song's success on mainstream rock radio stations, it was finally released to modern rock radio stations where it also became the band's first entry on the Alternative Songs, peaking at number 20.[7] The song failed to enter the Billboard Hot 100, instead reaching number 14 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.[8] The song was also the band's first entry on the Canadian Hot 100, peaking at number 48.[9]
The single debuted at number 151 on the UK Singles Chart for the week ending March 1, 2014.[10] It entered the top 100 at number 95 in its third week on the chart,[11] and in its fifth week, it peaked at number 61 with 3,737 copies sold.[12] 'Heaven Knows' also became the band's second number-one song on the UK Rock Singles Chart.[13]
'Heaven Knows' became the band's first song to chart in New Zealand and France, reaching numbers 38 and 158, respectively.[14][15]
Music video[edit]
The music video for 'Heaven Knows', co-directed by lead vocalist Taylor Momsen and Jon J, was shot on location in Miami.[16] Momsen said of the video, 'How do you sum up a song that is metaphorically speaking about everyone's life from any general perspective on video? You understate it. We decided to film variations of all of the issues we as a people are facing, whether personal, political or social. We took a lot of shots, each representing some social constant or emotional struggle. Some overt, some subtle, but it's all in there. Everything is thrown at you from the day you're born. Your only chance is to think for yourself... which is not as simple as it sounds.'[16]
The video premiered on Vevo on February 13, 2014.[16] It features a half-naked Momsen in black eye shadow, surrounded by burning books and heavily tattooed teens in a dark high school.
In popular culture[edit]
The song was featured on the soundtrack to the 2017 film American Satan, and was also featured in one of the trailers for the second season of Jessica Jones.
